HR 976 and 4C 34.13 : an X-ray odd couple.
Abstract
The single-lined spectroscopic binary Am star HR976 was observed by the Imaging Proportional Counter on the Einstein Observatory. Two sources with similar X-ray flux were detected in the IPC field: HR976 at 2.6 x 10 to the -13th erg/sq cm-s; and 4C34.13, a quasar, at 2.4 x 10 to the -13th erg/sq cm-s. The soft X-ray flux from HR976 is a factor of one-hundred less than the previous report, and its total X-ray luminosity is about 8 x 10 to the 28th erg/s. The quasar, which is a much harder X-ray source than the A star, has an estimated total luminosity of 8 x 10 to the 44th erg/s.
