The content of a typical HEAO-B field (
Abstract
The luminosity functions of extragalactic X-ray sources in clusters of galaxies and galactic nuclei are combined with a Friedmann cosmological model and a telescope response to predict source counts for the HEAO-B X-ray telescope. A thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with kT = 10 keV and no low-energy cutoff is assumed. Results are presented for an observing time of 100,000 sec with the image proportional counter and 40,000 sec with the high-resolution imager. It is found that the effect of varying the deceleration parameter from 0.05 to 0.5 is slight and that source evolution is a major uncertainty. The possible contribution of quasars is indicated.
