Formation of Double Layers in Laboratory Plasmas
Abstract
A review of experimental observations of electric double layers in different types of laboratory plasmas is presented. Particular investigations relating to the formation of a double layer and the layer stability are also discussed, and some typical plasma parameters in the different experiments are summarized. The existence of double layers in unmagnetized as well as magnetized plasma is now well established. However, problems concerning the layer formation, the layer stability, and the origin and significance of observed high frequency fluctuations remain to be solved.
