A study of highway embankment construction in South Carolina marshlands
Abstract
A site in Charleston, South Carolina was studied to determine practical alternatives to bridging over soft foundation soils. Many states with similar soil conditions to those evaluated at this site were contacted concerning their alternative solutions to bridging. A comparative cost study was made for the particular site in Charleston for several possible alternative solutions, and ecological effects of each were considered. It was found that the use of sand drains in combination with surcharging and geotechnical fabrics offer an alternative which is cost effective and sound engineering-wise.
