ESA technology development for communication satellites

The Specialized Advanced Systems and Technology Program, proposed as a fundamental element necessary for the continuation of the European Communication Satellites Program, is described. The specialized program will involve: (1) analysis and design of telecommunications systems and associated spacecraft configurations; (2) telecommunications technology and equipment defined for satellite payloads and ground stations; and (3) technology and equipment for other spacecraft systems (platforms). Mission objectives and main technologies are outlined for three areas of satellite communications: mobile, fixed, and broadcasting.
