Natural convection in a horizontal cylinder
Abstract
A numerical solution is presented for a twodimensional flow model of natural convection in a horizontal cylinder. The NavierStokes and energy equations are approximated by finitedifference equations. A special mesh is used to avoid the singularity at the axis of the cylinder. The resulting equations are solved using ADI and FFT. For an array of 672 mesh points, the computer time required per solution is about 1 minute on a CDC 171. The time step can be varied and at the optimum value the computer time required is independent of the Rayleigh number.
