The overredundant spacecraft - A competitive approach to future telecommunication satellites
Abstract
Contemporary operational space telecommunication systems incorporate a spare satellite in addition to the operational system. In view of the costs associated with the employment of a spare satellite, the present paper addresses the question whether cost reduction (without impairing operational reliability) could be achieved by augmenting the redundancy of a single satellite. The technological, reliability, and redundancy conditions for such an 'overredundant' communications satellite are derived.
