Macroscopic equations for a conducting fluid
Abstract
A derivation of the macroscopic transport equations for a plasma, considered as a single conducting fluid is presented. The equations of conservation of mass, of momentum, and of energy, for the plasma as a whole, are derived starting from the corresponding equations for each individual species constituing the plasma. These equations are complemented by a set of electrodynamic equations for a conducting fluid. A detailed derivation is given for the generalized Ohm's law. The complete set of simplified magnetodynamic (MHD) equations, normally used in MHD problems, is also presented and the approximations involved are discussed.
