Low-energy particle experiment
Abstract
This was a program directed toward an improved understanding of the sources and energization, transport and loss processes associated with the low-energy (keV) plasmas in the earth's magnetosphere, particularly as they relate to ionospheric perturbations and ionospheric-magnetospheric coupling. This program conducted a low-energy particle experiment on the S3-3 spacecraft. The experiment is still operating successfully and has made several major discoveries about previously unknown ionospheric acceleration mechanisms and the composition of the ring current.
