Observations of the UV Continuum in the Orion Nebula: An Investigation of the Scattering of Starlight by Dust
Abstract
Observations of the spatial distribution of the scattered starlight continuum would yield information on the UV properties of the particles which scatter the starlight. Such work has been done using ANS by A. N. Witt (1977) for Merope; however, the lack of a defined geometry prejudges the results. Orion has a wealth of information available which would allow a more complete picture of the scattering process to be developed and subsequently a more accurate determination of the UV properties of the dust. A determination of the UV properties of the dust would yield important clues as to the composition and size distribution of the dust.
