Applying wireless data coupling to measurements on moving machinery
Abstract
It is noted that in the past decade, wireless data coupling (short range telemetry) has become accepted as a versatile tool for making physical measurements on moving machinery. The paper gives a brief overview of the current state of the art. Attention is given to the application of telemetry to specific measurement problems, such as steam turbines, generators, and propellers. Topics discussed include designing a test, installation and calibration, and conducting the test. Finally, consideration is given to future developments. These include telemetry hardware trends such as increased numbers of measurement channels in a given space, improved accuracy and simplified operation. Also covered are telemetry application trends such as increased speed in small machines, and extension of the test duration.
