Response of the atmosphere to charged-particle precipitation
Abstract
It is found that the precipitation of energetic particles can be a mechanism for the formation of convective motions of air masses in the ionosphere-stratosphere system. The index of such precipitation-induced motions is the augmentation of the total ozone content. The rate of transfer of disturbances from the precipitating flux to the descending motion of the air masses is calculated and found to be about 100 km/hour in the 100-200 km height range and about 1 km/hour in the mesosphere and upper stratosphere.
