Pattern recognition of coherent eddies
Abstract
A brief introduction to pattern recognition is presented. Emphasis is placed on the application of pattern recognition to the detection of coherent eddies in turbulent flow fields. The discussion covers identification of coherent eddy structures, detection of turbulent/nonturbulent fluid, detection of eddies embedded in turbulent fluid, and calibration procedure. Although some of the elementary ideas from pattern recognition have been successfully used in fluid mechanics, there is still a wealth of mathematical tools suitable for studying coherent eddies in turbulent shear flows.
