Summary of NESS data collection operational activities
Abstract
The United States operates a system for the collection of environmental data from a variety of fixed platforms using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) located at 75 degrees west and 135 degrees west over the equator. The GOES satellites are operated for NOAA by the National Environmental Satellite Service (NESS). NESS activities in operating the GOES data collection system will be briefly described as will current uses. In addition, the United States participates with France in the cooperative ARGOS program. The ARGOS satellite system is carried on-board the Tiros-N series of polar orbiting satellites also operated for NOAA by NESS. NESS ARGOS activities will be described.
