Velocity measurements on propellant gases in gun tubes
Abstract
Streak photography and a laser velocimeter technique were tested in order to see whether they were suitable methods for velocity measurements on highly absorbing powder gas flows in gun barrel tubes. Preliminary results are presented and compared. It is concluded that while streak photography provides mean velocity values of layers at specific depths, the laser velocimeter technique allows velocity profiles to be obtained over the whole barrel cross section.
