Assessment of coding power gain on a satellite communications link
Abstract
Coding performance is evaluated in terms of power savings over an uncoded counterpart. The proposed criterion requires maintenance of the same rate of information transfer for all candidate systems. Various convolutional codes employed in the communications system of Lincoln Experimental Satellite numbers 8 and 9 (LES 8/9) are evaluated. Coding power gains based on theoretical and in-orbit link performance are presented.
