Annual review of fluid mechanics. Volume 11
Abstract
Model equations of nonlinear acoustics are considered along with cavitation in bearings, self-sustained oscillations of impinging free shear layers, vortex interactions, air flow and sound generation in musical wind instruments, finite amplitude baroclinic instability, ship boundary layers, and drop formation in a circular liquid jet. Attention is also given to rotating self-gravitating masses, the mechanics of animal joints, the numerical solution of compressible viscous flows, wakes in stratified fluids, internal waves in the ocean, the spreading of liquids on solid surfaces, geostrophic turbulence, the measurement of turbulence with the laser-Doppler anemometer, and similarity laws for constant-pressure and pressure-gradient turbulent wall flows.
