A high powered airborne load bank system
Abstract
A lightweight high-power airborne load bank system (LBS) capable of providing a heat load of up to 144 kW in increments of 1 kW has been successfully designed, manufactured and applied in the recent EF-111A flight test program. The LBS is designed as a special flight test equipment for the purpose of simulating the electrical power consumed and the thermal power dissipated by the jamming subsystem (JSS) transmitters on the EF-111A aircraft. The discussion covers system description and operation, early development testing and failure history, thermal transport subsystem performance, and integrated drive generator cooling subsystem (IDGCS) performance. It is shown that heat transfer and efficiency data could be obtained over a much wider operating envelope than would have otherwise been obtained were the actual JSS components utilized.
