Violent instability of one-dimensional forceless magnetic field in a rarefied plasma
Abstract
In previous studies the violent (Thirring mode) instability of a one-dimensional force-free magnetic field has been studied in detail in a hydrodynamic approximation. However, the hydrodynamic approximation is not justified for many applications with rarefied plasma (the solar corona, the magnetosphere, and certain laboratory experiments). In this paper the equilibrium distribution function, increment, and criterion of violent instability in collisionless and weakly collisional regimes are obtained for periodic one-dimensional force-free magnetic field without the use of the hydrodynamic approximation.
