Formation of fast-electron "tails" in a strong Langmuir turbulence
Abstract
A numerical model of one-dimensional Langmuir turbulence is presented. Self-consistent spectra of waves and particles in the turbulence are determined, and the integral characteristics of the turbulent state are calculated. It is found that plasma-wave absorption leads to the production of fast electrons with 'tails'; absorption occurs at low wave numbers and soliton amplitudes in the full-turbulence mode are considerably smaller than those in the case where turbulence is modeled using an invariant resonant particle distribution function. The generation of the tails in the direction of small k produces a new channel of short-wave transformation of Langmuir waves.
