Investigation of hypersound generation by a focused coherent light pulse
Abstract
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a solid optically transparent dielectric, which is caused by focused laser radiation, is analyzed for the cases of both large and small Stokes-component gains. The SBS process is considered in the laser focal region by using an approximation of a given pump field and neglecting nonlinear effects associated with hypersound pressure. An expression for the experimental SBS threshold is obtained, along with the divergence angle and frequency shift for the case of large Stokes-component gains. It is shown that the neglect of nonlinear effects associated with hypersound pressure limits the applicability of the approximations employed.
