Nonlinear periodic motions in a cold gas of noninteracting particles
Abstract
The paper considers the initial value problem relating to periodic variations of velocity in a cold gas of noninteracting particles. The evolution of density and velocity before and after 'overturning' of the velocity profile is examined in detail. The formation of density discontinuities and mean velocity after the appearance of a multistream flow is investigated. Consideration is given to the case of a sinusoidal initial condition and to the case of long time intervals.
