Diffusion of a plasma in a stellarator in the region of low collision frequencies
Abstract
The paper surveys data obtained from stellarator experiments on containment of weakly collisional plasmas when a significant role in the transfer processes is played by charged particles trapped on local inhomogeneities of the magnetic field. Analysis of published results shows that an increase in diffusion losses due to localized particles does in fact take place. However, the magnitude of this effect is smaller than predicted by neoclassical theory, apparently because of the presence of electric fields of a certain level.
