Development of an experimental spread spectrum maritime communication system, phase 1
Abstract
This report summarizes the results of the first phase of an investigation of a spread spectrum technique for maritime applications. Potential applications include distress signaling via satellite, remote monitoring of ship performance, and 'orderwire' signaling for future maritime satellite communication systems. The specific approach developed under this contract provides for low power, low data rate transmission through a maritime communications satellite. The receiver designed for this application uses a matched filter based on charge transfer devices. A baseband receiver was demonstrated during the first project phase. The second phase, which is now approaching completion, will encompass extension of the hardware to an intermediate frequency and testing via satellite.
