Design and testing of high performance brushes
Abstract
Electrical brushes made of very fine metal fibers have been made and tested. The results are most promising. Additionally the surface films on silver graphite brushes have been investigated. These appear to consist of a thicker layer of lubrication material and a thinner layer which presumably is a very thin layer of oxide and/or water. The former layer is subject to build-up and destruction in the course of running the brushes. A theory was made which is consistent with observations of fiber brushes.
