A new method of electric measurement of crack length
Abstract
Improvements to devices which are used to determine the existence of progression of a crack in an electrically conducting material are discussed. A pulsed electrical supply is used which reduces the response time of the measurement and, in particular, makes it free from noise and from zero drift in the d.c. amplifier. In the case of cyclic loadings, the pulses can be synchronized with the loadings. After describing in detail an instrument of this type, the flexibility of use and the performances obtained are shown for specific applications, such as the measurement in direct current of the length of a crack in two dimensions.
