Some properties of wave equations in inhomogeneous media

Inspired by the work of men like Bremmer, so many authors have developed the field of wave equations that it becomes difficult to maintain a sufficient overview of the subject. This paper attempts, therefore, to put together some of the basic notions and results in a slightly more general and systematic way than is usually employed.
