The microwave radiometer as a measuring tool of tropospheric thermal inversions
Abstract
Schoenwald has shown the possibility of using a microwave radiometer operating in the molecular oxygen absorption band for the determination of the vertical temperature profile of the atmospheric boundary layer. The present study attempts to establish via simulation whether the oxygen microwave radiometer could be of use in problems of microwave linking over the sea, where the presence of large thermal inversions in the height range between 50 and 250 m can significantly influence the propagation coverage.
