Thermophysics and thermal control
Abstract
Questions of surface system radiation are considered, taking into account thermal radiative properties of solar sail film materials, infrared reflectance and refractive index of condensed gas films on cryogenic mirrors, far-infrared properties of baffle coating materials, and solar reflectance of cryodeposits. Aspects of thermal conduction and constriction resistance are examined along with problems of heat transfer. Thermal control systems are also discussed, giving attention to the development of a low-temperature phase change thermal capacitor, reusable insulation systems for cryogenic earth-based space vehicles, the demonstration of an ultralightweight microsphere insulation system, design and test evaluation of a solid cryogen cooler insulation system, a porcelain enamel passive thermal control coating, a new thermal network correction method by the statistical regression analysis, and the thermal design and development of the Pioneer Venus large probe.
