Observation of Magnetic Dipole Strength in 16O
Abstract
We demonstrate that polarized-proton radiative capture may be used to unambiguously identify concentrations of magnetic dipole strength. Three M1 resonances are observed in the doubly magic 16O nucleus between Ex=16 and 20 MeV, with a relatively large total γ0-transition strength B(M1)↓>=0.24μ02.
