Stability of fieldreversed, forcefree, plasma equilibria with mass flow
Abstract
Woltjer (1958, 1959) has formulated the stability of hydromagnetic equilibria in terms of a variational principle in which the energy is minimized while keeping a number of integrals of the motion of the system constant. The present paper demonstrates the existence of stable cuspshaped plasma equilibria with finite flow velocity that have forcefree fields in the interior but are confined by surface currents. The present treatment differs from that of Woltjer in that it considers the plasma in the twofluid instead of in the hydromagnetic approximation.
