Double resonance excitation in the ionosphere
Abstract
Two electromagnetic waves, separated by ion acoustic frequencies Δω, are observed to excite discrete lower sidebands of electrostatic plasma waves at the critical ionospheric layer ω p( h) ≈ ω 1 ≈ ω 2. The coupling is strongest at Δω = ω = ω2 - ω1 = 2 kCs and extends over the range 0.5 ⪅ Δ/ω/ kCs⪅ 4.
