Resilient based flexible pavement design procedure for secondary roads
Abstract
Easy to use and reliable algorithms to predict the resilient response of flexible pavements in terms of material properties and layer thicknesses are developed based on the data generated from a modified finite element program and an elastic layer stress-dependent program. Other research objectives are: (1) to establish the significance of subgrade resilient properties in determining pavement response to load; (2) to establish the significance of the damage caused to the pavement by loads applied during periods of critical subgrade support; (3) to study the influence on pavement response of using different types of granular base materials and to examine the possibility of developing thickness equivalence factors; and (4) to study the influences of base material shear strength on the development of failure zones within the pavement cross-section and on the pavement response to load.
