Maximum energy flux in a plasma
Abstract
Like any conductor, a vacuum arc in a magnetic field will experience a force. It is reasonable to expect that the arc will be displayed in the direction of this force; however, particularly at low pressures, the arc has been observed to move in the opposite direction. This retrograde motion of the vacuum arc has been extensively studied, but the opinions are still divided. In the present paper, a mechanism based on the Hall effect is proposed for the retrograde motion of the cathode spot.
