Modeling of turbulent momentum transfer in the wake of a cylinder on the basis of the equation of third moments
Abstract
The mean velocity, turbulent flows (second moments of turbulent fluctuations), and third moments of turbulent fluctuations of the velocity field in the wake behind a cylinder are computed for large Reynolds numbers. Results are presented for two distinct methods used to close the moment equation sets: a method based on the hypothesis of fourth moments and the method of thirteen moments based on the kinetic theory of gases. The computations are compared with the experimental data of Townsend (1959).
