Life extension investigation and testing of fluid filled inertial instruments
Abstract
The paper deals with the discovery, investigation and subsequent resolution of potential low-temperature drift problems to which a large class of fluid-filled gyros and accelerometers are susceptible. A xenon backfill surveillance program is implemented to track the condition of the units which were retrofitted in the field. Test results from the surveillance accelerometers are discussed. The conclusion reached at this point in the surveillance program is that the life of the accelerometer will be extended by as much as 10 years with the xenon backfill gas. The alternate backfill gas approach to extending the life of the fluid-filled accelerometer has proven to be a very cost-effective method.
