On the ambiguity of the image reconstruction problem
Abstract
The reconstruction of a function from the modulus of its Fourier transformation, or, equivalently, its autocorrelation, is considered for the case of a discretely defined unknown function (the brightness distribution sought in optical and radio astronomy). The problem is examined for the cases of one and two dimensional brightness distributions, and it is shown than in the two dimensional situation, much of the ambiguity associated with the solution of factorizable polynomials is eliminated. Additional means of reducing reconstruction ambiguity by the use of supplementary information are also indicated.
