The multiple scattering of cosmicray muons in magnetic spectrometers
Abstract
The multiple scattering of highenergy cosmicray muons in solidiron magneticmomentum spectrometers is discussed and the results are compared with experimental measurements. In particular, the spectrometers which record orthogonal views of the muon trajectory are considered. The theory of Moliere is used to derive a multiplescattering probability distribution which can be directly compared with spectrometer data. This multiplescattering distribution is independent of the cosmicray spectrum, thus allowing cosmicray data to be used directly to investigate the predictions of multiplescattering theory.
