Study of the plasma broadening of spectral lines of hydrogenic ions
Abstract
A brief review of the fundamental assumptions made in plasma line broadening is presented, and the generalized lineshape formula is extended to treat the case of ionized emitters. The final formula is reduced to quadrature. The theory is then compared with calculations made using the present computational procedure in the limit that (1) the extra terms derived to account for ionized emitters are excluded, and (2) the ions are treated as purely static. The comparisons show how the additional contributions to the broadening operators affect the line profiles. The results are compared with experimental data on He II n = 2 to n = 3 and n = 2 to n = 4 transitions. The assymmetry and shift of the profiles are discussed along with the difficulties of the formulated model.
