Interstellar abundances of CO and CN molecules
Abstract
Short wavelength IUE spectra of three reddened stars were examined in an attempt to identify the interstellar CO lines. CO was detected towards HD 26571 and HD 154368, but not towards HD 21389, despite the presence of strong millimetre-wavelength CO emission in this line of sight. It is concluded that HD 21389 lies at the near edge of a dense cloud. Derived column densities for the other two stars are combined with optical and radio data to study the CN/CO abundance ratio. Results are consistent with the ion-molecule scheme for molecule formation.
