Charge states of low energy cosmic rays in the SKYLAB experiment
Abstract
The paper presents a study of energy spectra of C, N, O, Ne, Mg+Si and Ca-Fe ions in the energy region of 8-100 MeV/amu, which were recorded in a plastic detector stack exposed to low energy cosmic rays in the Skylab IV mission for a period of 73 days during a solar quiet period of 1973-74. It is reported that the spectra of N, O, and Ne ions show a maximum of about 12-16 MeV/amu, while the Mg+Si spectra indicate a different behavior. Also, the Ca-Fe spectra show enhancement. In addition, it is noted that the average flux of oxygen group particles is somewhat consistent with the interplanetary anomalous component observed in IMP and Pioneer missions. Finally, it is suggested that these anomalous component particles are responsible for the origin of the Skylab particles.
