Commercial U.S. satellites
Abstract
The current status of communications satellites and their influence on domestic networks are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the five generations of the Intelsat series. It is shown that by combining such techniques as digital multiplexing, modulation, multiple access, and source and channel coding, digital transmission should be capable of increasing communications capacity by as much as 100 percent over the analog transmission currently in use.
