Laminar convective heat transfer from a rotating disc in an enclosed cylindrical container
Abstract
Laminar convective heat transfer from a heated disk spinning inside a stationary cylindrical container to a stationary cooled end disk is studied. When the rotational Reynolds number is large, boundary layers are formed on the rotating and stationary walls. The momentum and energy integral equations of the boundary layers are solved to find the velocity and temperature fields. Experiments were performed with air to measure the pressure and temperature distributions and the heat transfer coefficient between the rotating and stationary disks. Theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is found that the heat transfer coefficient is insensitive to the spacing of the disks relative to their radii, as long as the boundary layers on the two disks do not overlap.
