Probability distribution of velocity fluctuations in turbulent free and wall flows
Abstract
The paper presents experimental results on onedimensional distributions of probability density of fluctuations of longitudinal velocity component in turbulent flows in a smooth circular pipe, as well as in axisymmetrical wakes of a sphere and of an elongated body of revolution in longitudinal flow. The feasibility of representing the probability density by a normal distribution and also their approximation by the GramCharlier series and by Pearson's curves is examined. The Reynolds number dependence of the probability distribution for flows in a smooth pipe is analyzed. Questions of self similarity of flow and of effect of the shape of the body on the probability distribution in a selfsimilar wake are considered.
