A queueing model for a hybrid data multiplexer
Abstract
A performance analysis is presented for a buffer used to multiplex two types of data in a line where sporadic short bursts of data, like inquiries from terminals, share a communication channel with relatively steady streams of data such as digitized voice, lengthy messages from computers, or traffic from a busy trunk. A model is formulated for the multiplexer and solved exactly. Numerical results are presented which illustrate tradeoffs involved in performance and line utilization.
