On the eclipsing binaries of the Ursa Major stream.
Abstract
The suitability of utilizing the age in the calculation of the absolute dimensions of close binary systems belonging to a cluster is investigated. By means of the photometric observations of Johansen (1971) and isochrone lines, a new determination of the age of the Ursa Major stream, together with the photometric elements and the absolute dimensions of Beta Aur, is carried out. The procedure is applied by assuming two different initial chemical compositions. Other eclipsing variables of the stream, RR Lyn and Alpha CrB, are also considered, and their absolute dimensions are sought according to the value of the age. The results are discussed. Composition parameters X = 0.602, Z = 0.044 and an age of about 270 million yr appear appropriate to give a good representation in the H-R diagram of the stars of the Ursa Major stream.
