The structure of the Orion Nebula: The ionized gas.
Abstract
The velocity field of the ionized gas in the Orion Nebula was investigated with an angular resolution of 1 arcmin by observing the H 76 alpha recombination line with the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg. There is a general pattern in the velocity field: the more negative velocities are found near the edges of the nebula and the more positive velocities near the center. The most positive radial velocity is found 30 arcsec east of the ionizing star Theta-1 C Orionis. The radio continuum peak as well as the brightest optical emission are located 30 arcsec west of this star. These characteristics are interpreted in terms of a source model where the ionizing star is located at the edge of a massive neutral cloud.
