On the MK spectral classification of metal-poor late-type stars.
Abstract
Summary. MK spectral classification of cool stars is checked by means of theoretical computations of line equivalent widths, using model atmospheres. It is found that line ratios used to determine spectra types and luminosity classes are indeed very sensitive to these parameters, for stars of solar metal content as well as very metal-poor stars. But the observed parameters, spectral type and luminosity class, are strongly sensitive to the stellar metal content, so that one must not convert them into stellar physical parameters unless the metal content is known.
