Spectroscopic and 21-cm line investigation of the clumpy irregular galaxy Markarian 296.
Abstract
Summary. Low and high dispersion spectra were obtained for the clumpy irregular galaxy Markarian 296 and its close neighbour Ma 295; 21-cm line profiles were also obtained for Ma 296 and for the other nearby clumpy irregular Ma 297. The radial velocity obtained for Ma 295 puts it in the Hercules cluster, while Ma 296 and 297 belong to the Seyfert Sextet Group. The integral properties obtained for Ma 296 and 297 are compared to those ofclassical irregular galaxies: they are brighter, larger, richer in neutral hydrogen and more massive. They also are overluminous compared to a classical irregular galaxy in which the gas and stellar contents would be increased by the same factor. From the rotation curve, the mass of the clumpy part of Ma 296 is evaluated to be 1.11 0 solar masses. This corresponds to a share per clump of 1.4 108 0, which is 50 times larger than the mass of giant H II regions.
