On the effective temperature of Sirius B.
Abstract
Expected X-ray count rates in the ANS soft X-ray band are computed for white-dwarf model atmospheres with effective temperatures of 25,000, 30,000, and 40,000 K. An effective temperature of 22,500 + or - 600 K and log g of 8.85 + or - 0.27 are derived for Sirius B from an analysis of recently observed UBV and uvby colors. An effective temperature of 27,400 + or - 1000 K is also determined for Sirius B, on the basis of the Hamada-Salpeter (1961) mass-radius relation for white dwarfs. Comparison of the effective-temperature results with the theoretical X-ray count rates indicates that the soft X-rays emitted by the Sirius system probably are not of thermal origin.
